Answers to common neurosurgery spine questions
What do I do if I feel that I might be having muscle spasms?
Muscle spasms can occur after back and neck surgery.  If your symptoms are mild you may try resting that part of your body and try applying heat or cold.  If your symptoms are severe or persist you may wish to call during normal business hours to discuss taking a prescription muscle relaxer.  If you think you are having strong muscle spasm that need treatment and our office is closed you should go to the hospital emergency room where you had your surgery for an evaluation and treatment that may include the prescription of muscle relaxer medication.  Unfortunately the currently available prescription muscle relaxers have side effects and are not very good at muscle relaxation in most people.  The good news is that muscle spasms, if they occur, usually do not persist for long.
