Answers to common neurosurgery spine questions
What do I do if the medication I am taking is not controlling my pain?
The development of severe pain may be normal for your condition and may simply mean that stronger medication is required.  Severe pain may also be an indication of a problem.  If severe pain occurs during normal clinic hours please call our office.  A nurse practitioner will evaluate you and have access to your medical records.  You may be asked to come in for an evaluation or additional medication may be prescribed.  During the evening or on weekends you should go to the emergency room of the hospital where you had your surgery for an initial evaluation.  If the distance is great you may choose to be seen in a hospital emergency room or an urgent care center closer you your home.  After evaluating you the physician seeing you will consult with the Neurosurgical Associates neurosurgeon on call and manage your condition.  The neurosurgeon on call will not be able to prescribe or refill strong (narcotic) pain medication over the phone.  This will have to be done by the emergency room physician who actually sees and evaluates you.
